More Tips for a Budget Holiday in Amsterdam

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

With a few street-smart tactics and affordable accommodations you can save money in Amsterdam.

Budget Accommodation in Amsterdam

When on a budget it’s always a good idea to stay in a hostel. Check out the Stayokay Amsterdam Zeeburg Hostel in the eastern part of the city. They provide entertainment, very reasonable room rates, tourist information and bike rentals. There is a tram near the hostel that will take you to city center. Plus, at hostels it’s easy to make friends and end up traveling together; splitting the cost of food at an open-air market (cheaper on weekdays), or making your own fun in one of Amsterdam’s 28 parks.

If you want a more romantic getaway, on a budget, reasonable accommodations are at the Bed and Breakfast Amsterdam. Located overlooking the Schinkel canal and across from Vondelpark entrance this Bed and Breakfast has all the necessities. It is also near a tram to city center and major museums.

Free concerts and live music in Amsterdam

When staying at the Stayokay or Bed and Breakfast ask about free concerts and live music. During certain days (the days vary that’s why you should ask) you can find music at parks, bars or on the street. When walking around or shopping looking for flyers that have information about events and coupons. They are usually in any “hip looking” boutique or restaurant- avoid chain establishments.

Other cost cutters

  • Use the Internet at libraries- main branch located at Oosterdokskade 143
  • Never take a taxi, walk or ride bikes
  • Avoid restaurants and dine at street vendors (they carry as many unique foods as the restaurants)
  • For inexpensive shopping or “just for fun looking” try the neighborhoods of Jordaan and De Pijp.

    nice blog :)
just one question: are all the pictures featured in the articles yours? because I’ve seen some of them on other sites like flickr.com but I didn’t find any credits to the authors… just wondering

Depends on the blog entry. There will be credits for each picture used. For instance this one says “Photo courtesy of Bed & Breakfast Amsterdam.”
    Thanks for reading Sonia!

@Sonia : Most of the time we use Flickr and Wikipedia photos which can be copied and freely distributed on the Internet, and we always attribute the work to the author by adding his/her name or nickname and a link to the original picture.
