I could never have imagined that toothache could give you a ticket to travel. I would assume that a rotten tooth would mean being strapped to the chair in my nearest dentist clinic. Now I know different.

There is something called dental tourism (how mental is that?), which is actually a type of medical tourism. It is all about looking for dental care outside your local healthcare service. One of the main driving factors of dental tourism is the cost factor – as with any other service people travel to cheaper destinations. The most common form of travel is between countries that share borders, for example, between Germany and Switzerland or England and Scotland.
One of the very attractive destinations for dental tourism is Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. Hungarian dentists are renowned for their international accreditations as well as membership of international organizations. This is mainly due to the fact that dentistry programs offered by the Hungarian universities are top of the class.
Some of the treatments available in dental clinics in Budapest are: aesthetic dental prosthesis, diagnosis, implantation, oral hygiene, tooth rehabilitation treatment, dental cosmetics, periodontics, orthodontics, aesthetic dentistry, oral surgery, and child-and preventive dentistry. With regard to cosmetic dentistry, the most commonly offered services are ultrasonic scaling, polishing, dental cleaning, tooth whitening, gingival pocket and gum disease treatment, intraoral sandblasting, and tooth jewellery.
The duration of a dental procedure and cosmetic dental treatment is usually between 3 to 7 days. This treatment is organized in such a manner that you will have time to tour Budapest and enjoy its scenic beauty. This most comfortable arrangement is coupled with (the somewhat less comfortable) dental treatments like dental implants, bridges, crowns, root canal and veneers. The cheapest treatment usually starts at 10 Euros for one root canal to 800 Euros for chrome cobalt dentures and sinus lifting treatments. This is usually a saving of close to 7,000 Euros for a similar treatment in the United Kingdom. The reason dental treatment is this affordable is that the cost of living in Budapest is much lower than in many other European countries. This means that dental equipment is not very expensive. Renting or buying space for a clinic is also affordable, as is labour. All these factors translate into cheaper service. Dental tourism is so advanced in Budapest that most clinics offer a free shuttle service to their patients to and from the airport. The airport is about 28 kilometres from the city. Budapest is particularly accessible from the United Kingdom as it takes only a two hour flight to get here. British Airways, Hungarian Airlines Malév, Easyjet and many other budget airlines such as Sky Europe, Aer Lingus, WizzAir, Jet2, Air Berlin, Ryanair, etc. operate in this region.
Clinics involved in dental tourism usually form partnerships with hotels in order to offer discounts to their patients. Some hotels have formed alliances with certain dental clinics in Budapest and provide a 10% discount to the patients of those clinics. If you want to stay on your own, a three-star hotel would charge anything between 50 Euros to 100 Euros for a single night. While you are in the city you can use the most affordable public transport to get to different tourist attractions such as the museums – Roman Ruins and Aquincum Museum, the Buda castle, and the numerous thermal baths in the city that are formed thanks to natural hot springs that are endowed with medicinal properties. Budapest is truly a place to have fun, even with a bad tooth!

We are also involved in dental tourism. Our dental clinic is located in Manila/Philippines. Our dental lab which provides us the dentures is under the supervision of a german dental technician. Manila is a world class tourism country with probably the best beaches world-wide…

Before you’re going somewhere for dental tourism, you should find as much as information about price and quality first. For me I will suggest Bangkok, Thailand for dental tourism because of much cheaper price to have a good dental work and good quality.

Great post about dental tourism. Another aspect that makes Hungary a very good destination for dental tourism from other European Union countries is the free movement of goods and services. If you are an EU citizen and you have an insurance which will foot part of the bill, then it must provide the same refund for a dental bill from any other EU country – including Hungary.
My company ( http://www.dacadia.eu ) takes the tourism part of dental tourism literally, so we do not just pick up our clients from the aiport and accompany them to the dentist; they are also given personal tours of the city by their contact person.

I also recommend for every dental tourist to check out price and quality, meaning especially in dental tourism the cheapes price is not always the best option. You have to find out in what clinic you get the best quality and an affordable price, it will not help you to pay very little and after a short time all work has to be repeated. Our dental clinic offers 10 years warranty on all crown and bridge work, ww.dentist-philippines.com .

Dental tourism is one great idea to encourage people to be aware and realize that they should not take for granted their dental health.

I need 4 zygomatic implants to support a 12-tooth titanium/ceramic bridge. I have very thin bone in the anterior region. I will require general anesthesia for this procedure. I have checked the price in India and in Bangkok, but would like to know the price in Budapest. Can anyone refer me to a clinic that does zygoma implants in Budapest?

Many countries are trying to promote themselves as dental tourism destinations for denture implants, dental implants and dental veneers. Thailand a traditional hot spot for health tourism in Asia is now seeing a lot of competition from Singapore, Malaysia and even Korea.

Dental costs Budapest
I have just returned from Budapest (10-Jun-10) after completing an extensive dental treatment plan, (over fourteen hours in the chair). I am glad to say that my experience there was a very positive one due to the good luck of having been treated by an excellent dentist. On advice I committed myself and my teeth to an ex-lecturer who now has his own dental practice. This gentleman takes great pride in his work, is kind and patient with the nervous and who also happens to be a really nice guy.
This family practice consists of two working dentist’s, including owner Dr Laszlo Jaky nurses and an excellent dental technician whose handiwork is installed invisibly on the front of my mouth. To reach them you will need to make direct contact by email or telephone. This way of working has cost benefits for the patients as there are no agents or middlemen to bump up the prices, which are far lower than those of the heavily promoted Budapest clinics we see so much of on the internet..
The decision to avoid the widely advertised and often criticized “factory jobs” as they are known locally was not a difficult one, as ever when members of one profession, i.e. commercial agents get too involved in the affairs of another then the standards go one way and the prices another.
From my observations at this clinic I can state that the quality of dentistry in Budapest is very high. I live in Dublin and have had almost six decades of dental treatment in three different western European countries, and in my opinion this clinic (Jadedental.hu) provides care and expertise superior to any encountered elsewhere at a fraction of the cost.

Yes, I have also heard about dental tourism. One of my friends in Europe also did this. She traveled all the way to an Asian country to get affordable dental services and she is satisfied about the services she acquired.

My husband and I returned after our 3rd visit to the Kreativ Dental clinic in Budapest, Hungary (we live in Washington, USA). I did extensive research on dentistry tourism before we visited Kreativ the first time, the purpose to see the clinic first hand, meet the staff and get an impression of quality overall. The 3rd visit we both underwent full cosmetic restoration and are more than thrilled at the results, quality and affordability, needless to say the guarantee. My career was executive healthcare management and after personally visiting the onsite dental lab, undergoing the procedures and reviewing the quality certification, I am more than impressed and would recommend anyone go there. The clinic is extremely well organized, staff speak more than 5 languages and it is a superb facility. I feel so strongly I am posting to every blog I can. Hungarians pride themselves on their education and all dentists have sub-specialities and practice in an inter-disciplinary environment. They conduct peer review, and the training facility onsite alone exceeds any US dental practice unless it is within an academic setting. So….see kreativdent.eu and see for yourself. EM me – I will be happy to speak to you personally!

I would have a hard time going to another country for dental care. We have the best of the best here in the USA. I have had a couple of implants by a local dr. in Utah County. Dr Bennett is an amazing and professional Dentist.
He also works on TMJ Therapy and other dental procedures.

Hi everybody,
yes, it is very popular nowadays. People from Western Europe travel to Hungary to get implants, crowns, bridges. The cost of a dental treatment in Hungary is more cheaper than e.g. in Germany, Austria, England. You can save a huge amount of money.
Ciao,

This is my first time to hear about this term dental tourism… Travelling outside your very own country in relation with health care is very expensive so it is really a big help to grad discount and read information such as this article in order to cut down cost.

hello everyone the blog that you provide for the Dental Tourism is very good I really like your experience.

I see that today it has been reported that Dental surgeons in Scotland get paid typically £119k each year! That’s for the ‘principle’ dentist nonetheless…the lowly ‘associates’ are only on £67k average! I am in the wrong line of employment…

If you are really bothered about the cost factor then you can visit India for dental tourism where there is no compromise for convenience.
February 21st, 2011 at 6:35 am
The article is pretty good, but I have to consider the safety of this medical tourism. Because it drives the cost of treatment or operation. You go to another country you are not familiar with it, you do not know what they use or what are they doing. For you it is not safe.

India also uses dentistry in as a tool in tourism. I didn’t know Hungary is doing it too.
