New York is one of the most diverse places on the planet to try food from all over the world. However, if you are visiting The Big Apple (note the food theme in its name) for the first time, you want something that is decidedly New York, so here are the Top 5 fast foods to try while touring New York City:

Breakfast - There is no shortage of street cart vendors throughout the city up at the crack of dawn. You can get a great cup of coffee and a roll or donut at almost any one of them. However, if you prefer something sweet for breakfast, as many Europeans often do, then there is no finer breakfast than a nutella waffle off the Waffles and Dinges Cart. One is always parked at the South Street Seaport and another at the Central Park Zoo, while a truck roams throughout the city, so just check their website or Twitter feed for the daily location.
Bagels – This is another New York mainstay. I have traveled the world and never found a better bagel than in NYC. It’s in the water, really, truly, because the best bagels are boiled in it. You can grab a bagel at one of those AM coffee carts but better to head to a local bagel store and buy what is called a “Blizzard” or bagel with everything on it with a “schmear”– the topping includes poppy and sesame seeds, salt, garlic and onion and the “schmear” is just the right amount of cream cheese spread inside the sliced bagel. Oh yum!
Hot Dogs – Americans invented food on the run and a hot dog, or frankfurter, is the easiest food to grab and go. New Yorkers turn to Nathans or Grey’s Papaya when the mood overtakes them.
Potato Knish – This is a little fried puff of potato bliss. You can find them with many street vendors or in every Kosher deli throughout the city. Make sure it’s hot and always dip in gold mustard before biting.
Black & White – This is a giant cookie which has the texture of a cake. It is iced half with vanilla and half with chocolate (hence it’s Black & White name). Most pastry shops will carry them but you can find the pre-packaged variety in any deli. Head up to Yankee Stadium for a treat and you will find the cookies are actually Blue & White instead, the team’s colors.
