Vegetarian Restaurants in Bern, Switzerland

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Swiss cuisine is not the most vegetarian-friendly in the world, but incidentally the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Europe is here in Switzerland. If you’re visiting Switzerland’s capital in Bern, here are some vegetarian-friendly places to eat. Vegetarian food is easier to find than vegan and the best option for strict vegans is the famous Tibits.

Veggie Restaurants in Bern

Tibits (Bahnhofplatz 10) is partly owned by Hiltl, Europe’s oldest vegetarian restaurant. Tibits is famous for its fresh food and good quality, and in the Tibits in Bern you can eat in or get a packed lunch to take out. Much of the food is lacto-ovo-vegetarian but vegan options are available and the foods are clearly labelled. The breakfast buffet offers a range of breads, croissants and pastries, cereals, yoghurt and fruit. The lunch buffet includes more than 30 salads and there are soups, hot dishes, desserts and snacks. You can simply pick whatever you like from the buffet and have it weighed on the counter; the price of your meal depends on its weight. Drinks include herbal teas, organic coffees and fresh juices. Sandwiches are available to take-away too.

Tibits uses a lot of seasonal produce, much of which is locally produce,  and it uses organic milk and free-range eggs. It is not cheap, but then again nothing is cheap in Switzerland. Tibits is also easy to find: it is right on Bahnhofplatz, just above the railway station itself, and it is open daily.

Hier und Jetzt (Bubenbergplatz 10) serves vegetarian food and also offers take-away service.  The menu includes soups, vegetarian pasta and salads and this is a good place to have lunch or grab a vegetarian take-away.

Asian Food - While much of traditional Swiss cuisine involves meat, Asian restaurants are good places to find vegetarian options. Bern has several Indian restaurants: try Maharaja Palace (Effingerstrasse 51) or Mahamaya (Länggassstrasse 43). The food court in Markthalle (Bubenbergplatz 9) has Indian and Thai food and there are several vegetarian options.
