Top 5 Day Trips from Berlin

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Looking for a great place to visit on a day trip from Berlin, Germany? Check our these 5 beautiful destinations:

1. Frankfurt-an-der-Oder

Not to be confused with the city of Franfurt in the south west of Germany, this is a very pretty little town on the Oder River found about 100 km from Berlin in the state of Brandenburg. It’s near to the Polish border in the east of Germany but only takes about an hour on the train from Berlin. It’s really worth a visit for the architecture alone. There are some wonderful gothic structures, namely the town hall, the post office and the Friedenskirche, the latter of which is one of the oldest stone buildings in the town and is certainly worth checking out.

2. Szczecin

Not too far from Frankfurt (Oden) over the border and into Poland is the city of Szczecin. As the largest seaport in Poland, whose borders are mostly landlocked, this is a vibrant and busy city with plenty to see and do. The Maritime Museum is an obvious choice for the day-tripper. It’s a branch of the National Museum, another one being The Gallery of Contemporary Art. Another must-see when you get there is the Zamek Ksiazat Pomorskich (The Pomeranian Prince’s Castle), which has been expertly restored following heavy bombing during WW2. If you can time it so there’s a musical concert or opera on when you’re there then you’ll never forget it.

3. Spreewald Forest

Berlin is a city surrounded by some wonderful miles of greenery and lakes within easy reach of the city centre. It’s a cleverly cultivated lowland area with the river Spree meandering in numerous directions providing visitors with numerous activities and sights from rowing boat trips along the calm river, to slightly more leisurely paddle boats for all the family, canoeing, cycle rides, camping, hot-air ballooning, thermal baths and much more. It’s a haven retreat, fun for everyone and a perfect way to break up a city holiday in Berlin. Don’t forget to try one of the famous Spreewald cucumbers either!

4. Neuhardenberg Castle

Only about 30 kms out of the Berlin, Neuhardenberg Castle there are sections of the estate that date back to the 17th Century but there have been numerous additions over the years. Not just a castle like any other, one of the beauties of this day out is the park’s grounds engulfing the castle. The lakes and gardens and beautifully kept and the nearby Schinkel church often plays host to summer concerts.

5. Wandlitz

Another quaint and very German little town within earshot of the capital is Wandiltz. A short train ride from Berlin and you’ve made it through the woods and lakes to one of the most German-looking towns you could find. There are lots of little old churches for such a small town and if you wander off the beaten path and into the woods and lowland marshes you could stumble into the former summer house of a certain Joseph Goebbels called Bogensee that looks a little eerie now the man has left.
