Barcelona is Catalonia’s capital city and it is the 2^nd largest city in Spain.  Being located on the northeastern coastline of the Mediterranean Sea, the city has a rich history that stretches back over 2,000 years.  For many international travelers, Barcelona is a particular favorite because of its climate and close proximity to the water.  But there are so many other reasons to visit the city, including the art, cuisine, and the shopping.  But what do you do where the cuisine is concerned if you are a vegetarian?

Fortunately, Barcelona is filled with a wide array of over 30 vegetarian restaurants and food stores so that you are able to enjoy dining out while you are visiting the city.  Here are some top picks for veggie restaurants in Barcelona:

CatBar – this is a bar that features Vegan micro-brews and a Vegan-friendly, Western menu.  There is an all day breakfast menu (Vegan, of course) and the main entrées include burgers, English chips or beans, soups, cakes and even Vegan pizza.  They also offer free Wi-Fi and a fast food menu as well.

Govinda – one of the city’s first vegetarian restaurants, the menu features Indian Vegan cuisine and an extensive salad bar.  They offer a 3-course weekday lunch menu and dessert but this is not what is referred to as a Hare Krishna establishment.  Coffee and tea are also available for those who want either.

Gopal – These establishments feature an all Vegan Spanish and Western menu and a juice bar as well as a fast food and take out menu.  Salads and snacks are also served.  You can dine inside or out and the restaurant is wheelchair accessible.  This is a great place to enjoy a quick bite during a busy afternoon.

Juicy Jones (Cardenal and Hospital) – It is strictly Vegan with beer and wine to accompany your meal.  Each day there is a different “special” which includes bread, a sample plate consisting of various small vegan dishes, and is finished off with a dessert of your choice.  Both locations have a funky but very colorful atmosphere.

Aguaribay – the menu features a nice variety of Spanish Vegan dishes including Lacto, Organic, and Ovo entrées.  The juices and milkshakes that they serve are made with biologic and fresh products.  There are special coffee drinks and cocktails as well as wines that are biodynamic and ecologic in nature.  Outdoor seating and Wi-Fi are available while the establishment is wheelchair accessible.

Bio Space – It is a two-storey organic supermarket that sells a wide range of foods and other related products.  Their specialties include baby foods, fresh fruits, vegetables, and other non-food products such as organic cleaners and toiletries.  They open Monday through Saturday at 8:30 and are closed on Sundays.
