Lesser known Australian vacation destinations

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Most travelers who enjoy vacationing in other areas than what is available in their home countries have oftentimes considered or visited the continent of Australia.  The country is well-known for its numerous tourist destinations such as Adelaide, Brisbane, The Gold Coast, The Great Barrier Reef, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney.  But what if you desire visiting some of the lesser known and less crowded vacation spots? Places were there are no maddening crowds, the hustle and bustle of large cities. Well, here are three choices for lesser known Australian vacation destinations.

Cairns – the upper region of Queensland is the location of the city of Cairns, one of the more popular Australian vacation destinations.  Located 1,000 miles to the north of the capital and largest city of Brisbane, Cairns has a fascinating history. Apart from the usual small town feel, the cit boasts of scenic beaches, sightseeing destinations, restaurants and pubs catering to those seeking a place to unwind.

The more popular reasons for visiting this city involve venturing out into the ocean to see some stunningly scenic areas and attractions.  An hour-long boat ride will take you to the Great Barrier Reef among other attractions and islands that are extremely popular with scuba divers and snorkelers.

Darwin – the Northern Territory’s capital city and one of the more interesting areas compared to the many other coastal communities of the country.  Although the Northern Territory is considered one of Australia’s more sparsely populated area, the city of Darwin is fairly sizeable.

With many close ties to Asia such as East Timor and Indonesia, water recreation is one of the most popular venues of the region with some outstanding options as boat tours, fishing trips, and sailing adventures.  Beaches are beautiful and you can find all of the snorkeling, sunbathing, and swimming that you could possibly stand.

Margaret River – located near the southern end of the coastline of Western Australia is the small community (est. 4,500) of Margaret River.  It lies 172 miles (277 km) to the south of Perth.  The city and surrounding region has evolved from the poverty stricken agricultural area that it once was to what many Australians and international wine connoisseurs will tell you (without hesitation) is the finest wine producing region of Australian.

Surprisingly, for being such a lightly populated area, Margaret River attracts 500,000+ tourists and visitors annually.  Celebrations and festivals associated with the wine industry as well as numerous wine tours are very common activities to enjoy.  However, there are a number of excellent golf courses throughout the area as well as Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park which features outstanding scenery in one of Australia’s most natural and undeveloped areas.
