The sprawling city of Athens is best known for the 7 historical hills of the city (there are a total of 12) and the three mountains that encompass the city on all but one side. Aside from being the capital city, it is also recognized as being the birthplace of Western Civilization as well as classical Greece. However, if there is one thing that Greeks are well known for it’s that they love socializing and don’t always rely on having to have a special occasion to do so.

Athenians love partying and will do it every night of the week if given the opportunity to do so. As a result, Athens’ nightlife has been compared to that of London, New York, or Paris. There are several areas that are popular favorites for the locals. Syggrou Avenue is loaded with bars and nightclubs as well as Iera Odos and Pireos Street, the industrial strips in Gazi. During the summer months, the action shifts to the coastal cities of Glyfada, Voula and Vouliagmeni and Poseidon Avenue in Athens. Here’s a list of some of the more popular nightlife spots to consider whenever visiting the city.
Horostation – you would never know that this relaxing café becomes one of the city’s hottest nightspots just by looking at it, but there are actually three storeys to this club, each one featuring a different style of music.
Wild Rose – although the action rarely kicks into high gear before midnight, this is one of the best places to spend an evening in if you want to enjoy a night of dancing and drinking your favorite beverage.
Folie – as the name of this nightclub implies, it’s all about having fun throughout the evening at this establishment. Depending on the night of the week, you can enjoy a variety of different musical genres such as funk, hip-hop, Latin, and reggae. The most popular nights occur when a live Brazilian band plays.
Plus Soda – this nightspot has oftentimes been referred to as “the most famous dance club in Athens.” The heavy-thumping Techno music is the favorite of the chic younger crowd that frequents this establishment who will tell visitors to the city that this is a place to see – and be seen while you’re at it.
An Club – located in the area known as Exarchia near the Polytechnic University of Athens, this is the spot preferred most by college students and younger adults. This is called the Wild West of the Athenian youth culture. The Half-Note Jazz Club and Mike’s Irish Bar are two other favorites in the area, but once again, you need to be prepared for a younger crowd if you visit any of the bars and clubs in this area of Athens.
