Andalusia is bathed in the sun’s rays for three thousand hours every year. And in the summer, it’s hot, incredibly hot, every day’s a scorcher.

In fact it’s so hot that several areas in the region have each earned the nickname of ‘the frying pan of Spain.‘ No wonder then, that when it comes to sunbathing, many people come here and shed all their clothes, and inhibitions, to give the body beautiful an all over tan.

Spain is very friendly towards the naked person. It is not against the law to be naked anywhere in the country, provided that you respect others, and are not undressing in places that may cause offense. So there are loads of areas where a person can be in the buff. Here are the some of the best that Andalusia has to offer.

  • Vera Playa

A nudist paradise in Almeria, in the south-east corner of Spain. Within the naturist zone people can walk the streets, visit supermarkets, and prop up bars completely nude. There’s a 2 km stretch of beach that is officially naturist, and some of it is bordered by naturist urbanizations. At the north end of the beach is the Vera Playa Club Hotel, the only naturist hotel in Spain. Guests are free to keep their clothes in their rooms, except at mealtimes and during the evening. The hotel has four wings and they encircle the magnificent outdoor pool, which also features a whirlpool. There is an undress code by the pool; guests are not allowed to wear swimming costumes.

  • Costa Natura, Costa Del Sol

A naturist Andalusian village, where nude is the norm. It was the first official nudist resort on the Spanish mainland and is home to about 200 apartments. The village has its own private beach, a swimming pool, Jacuzzis and tennis courts. It’s set in a tropical garden of lush plants and palm trees. If you take your clothes off when you arrive, you need never see them again until you leave. Although some people do dress for dinner.

  • Isolated Coves

Andalusia has a diverse coastline of more than 800 km. There are caves, crystal blue waters and volcanic cliffs. It’s interspersed by many isolated coves that are easy to get to by car. Some are officially naturist, others are not. But swimming and sunbathing naked is permitted on any beach in Spain.

To find your ideal isolated spot, hit the coastal roads and stop when you see one that takes your fancy.

For some places you will have to leave your car at the top of a cliff, and navigate your way down on foot, which is not always as daunting as it sounds. Elsewhere, it’s possible to take your car down almost to the water’s edge.

Are you saying that it’s ok to sunbathe totally naked on any public beach in Spain. Do you know if this is also true for Portugal.
    Thank you

I don’t know about Portugal, but in Spain there is nothing in the law that says you can’t sunbathe naked on any beach. Most people stick to naturist beaches or private coves to sunbathe in the nude. If people sunbathe naked on ‘textile’ beaches the only stipulation that the law makes is that undressing and being nude does not cause alarm or distress. If it does, that is an arrestable offence.
