Best Beach Vacations in Andalusia, Spain

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

The south Spanish region of Andalusia is the home to some of the most beautiful Atlantic and Mediterranean beach areas.  It is a region that is characterized by ancient cities, beaches, and deserts.  The beaches along the Costa de la Luz and Costa del Sol also offer some of the best beach vacations in Andalusia, Spain.  The following is a list of the most popular seaside vacation areas.

Playa Victoria (Cádiz) – with its champagne-colored sands, the historic port city of Cadiz is the home to this popular beach area.  This 1¼-mile (2 km) long strip of beach is rated as one of the best in Spain by locals and visitors alike.  Watersports abound here at Playa Victoria and so do the bars, beach bars (a.k.a. chiringuitos), and restaurants.

Playa de la Caleta (Cádiz) – known to the locals as Baño de la Vina because of the barrio it butts up to, it is situated in the Old Town area just east of Castillo de Santa Catalina where the beach and its golden sands form a half-moon crescent.  Castillo de San Sebastián lies to the west and is another fortification that is reachable via causeway at the inlet.  It was once a favorite of the Phoenicians and today is frequented by crowds of sunbathers.

Playa Isla Canela (Ayamonte) – this was the site where Columbus dreamed about the impossible dream and is now recognized as one of the most popular beaches of the area known as the Costa de la Luz.  The huge sandbars of the area protect the tranquil waters of the sea.  This is also one of the less crowded, quieter beach areas where you can enjoy beach kiosks that rent all types of watersports equipment.  There are numerous bistros offering some of the tastiest freshly caught and cooked seafood in the entire region.

Playa Zahara (near Tarifa) – Tarifa is continental Europe’s geographically southernmost town.  It is also viewed as Europe’s windsurfing capital because of the ever-reliable winds that grace the beaches of the area.  Zahara de los Atunes is a little, quaint fishing village and the home to some of the most beautifully spectacular white sand beaches of Costa de la Luz.  Playa Zahara is 5 miles (8 km) in length so there is plenty of beach for providing a different experience each day of your vacation.  Although the landscape is somewhat savage in nature, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the sea and the African coast.

The azure blue sea, sandy beaches and sunny ambience are the perfect ingredients for a wonderful beach holiday. And Andalusia is perfect for those looking to unwind and relax on the best beaches in Spain. With some of the finest hotels located on the beach or just minutes away from it, you can be at ease.
