Amsterdam Coffee Shops

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

One of the more popular tourist destinations in Western Europe is the city of Amsterdam, the capital and largest city of the Netherlands.  Rich in history and culture, it is Europe’s 6th largest metropolitan regions.  However, one of the most significant features and favorite attractions for many visitors to the city are the “coffee shops” in Amsterdam.  The history of the coffee shop dates back nearly four decades to the early 1970’s when it was finally realized that the war on drugs was futile where the Dutch were concerned.

If you are not familiar with the concept of the Amsterdam coffee shop, it is not the coffee that is the favorite menu item.  It is Cannabis or as it is more commonly known, marijuana.  Currently, there are over 300 coffee shops in Amsterdam, most of which feature numerous varieties of marijuana to enjoy while drinking your favorite cup of coffee.  Additionally, there are no issues with legalities due to the relaxed Dutch culture.  The following is a list of some of the recommended coffee shops to venture into while visiting Amsterdam.

Coffeeshop the Rockies – located just off Leidseplein, this unique coffee shop and hotel caters to expats, locals, and tourists alike with its publike atmosphere and large smoking lounge.  The crowd is one of the liveliest in Amsterdam.

Coffeeshop Abraxas – with two locations in the city center, these particular coffee shops feature a colorful mosaic décor and large couches to relax on while enjoying the menu items offered.  Most of the locals agree that Coffeeshop Abraxas a real happy and relaxing feel.

Coffeeshop Pinkfloyd – named after the famous rock band, this friendly and warm coffee shops entrance is adorned by a pink pig.  Pink Floyd’s music is the majority of the music venue.  Additionally, you can enjoy some great sandwiches and even internet connections.

Café the Dolphins – one of Amsterdam’s liveliest and “smoke-friendly” venues and is located conveniently near to Leidsplein.  Aside from beer and coffee, there is a huge drink menu to take advantage of while enjoying your favorite “smoke.”  Free Wi-Fi internet connections are also available so you can surf the web while enjoying the menu.

Coffeeshop Little – this is a tiny little club situated in the basement of a building at Vijzelgracht 47.  The friendly staff and affordable prices make this coffee shop a popular destination of both locals and tourists alike.

Coffeeshop Mellow Yellow – Amsterdam’s first coffee shop ever and a smoking reminder for the Cannabis crowd of the 1970’s.  The shop provides you with an enjoyable break from the crowds that pack the city center.

Coffeeshop Choice Exact – located just off Dam Square on a busy tourist street, this is one of the older style coffee shops in the city.  It caters to groups of individuals who enjoy drinking beer and watching football.

    Hi
Holland is actually considering banning tourists from coffeeshops!

Read about it in my post about Amsterdam coffee shop

I have to say I agree with Bud. Your listing are coffee shops that are very touristy, very expensive and very commercial. Just not very good.
