How to get from the airport to central Venice

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Venice is served by two international airports, Marco Polo has been the most popular to date with full service airlines while the second, Treviso, is the base for budget airline routes to and from the city. Unsurprisingly, Treviso is further away and therefore connections are slightly less convenient.

Marco Polo Airport offers travellers the chance to experience one of the most glamorous airport transfers anywhere in the world as they cruise across the Laguna Veneta towards the iconic skyline and grandeur of Venice. You can do this in real style by hiring your own water taxi or on the more mundane but cheaper water buses. It’s worth bearing in mind that there is a very real difference in time as well as the cost of these, with the bus taking between an hour and an hour and a half while the taxi takes a mere thirty minutes.

Both of the airports serving Venice have transport links to the Italian railway system but these will only be of use if you are travelling away from Venice into the rest of Italy. There are no rail connections from the airport into the centre of the city.

If you are really travelling on a shoestring then there are regular buses from both Marco Polo and Treviso Airports to the Piazzale Roma, a depressing concrete void on the Venice side of the causeway linking the city to the mainland. From there you can jump into a water taxi to your hotel or simply walk.

Marco Polo Airport is very well provisioned with car hire companies, Treviso marginally less so. However, as with the trains, these will only be of much use if visitors are heading into Italy since cars are not very practical in Venice, the city of canals and water.

As with anywhere in the world, visitors arriving unprepared, tired and gullible will end up paying much more than is necessary for a convenient transfer. Tickets for all the transfers mentioned above are now available to be purchased in advance online for a discount. Budget airlines also offer discounted transfer tickets on the plane before landing although these tend to be only marginally cheaper than the walk-up price.

The combination of bus and boat required to make the transfer between Venice and its airports mean it is advisable to ensure all late night or early morning journeys are planned and booked in advance. Most of the better hotels will be able to manage these plans for you but the lower end hotels and hostels will usually expect guests to fend for themselves. Visitors may find that the cost of transfers more than doubles the very cheap plane tickets arriving or departing at inconvenient times.
