When thinking about Amsterdam images of clogs, tulips, cheese and windmills usually come to mind. For many people it may also be the red light district and coffee shops, but there is a lot more than that in this interesting city. A visit to Amsterdam is something you’ll never regret.ù
The most common way to move around the city is by bike. You can also take the tram, which goes to most tourists’ spots.
There is a lot to see, but if you only have 24 hours it is a good idea start with a tour around the canals. Amsterdam has more canals than Venice and more bridges than Paris. Most of them are illuminated at night giving the city it famous canal belt charm. Along the picturesque streets and apart from the beautiful gabled houses you can find numerous shops, galleries and authentic cafes.
Near Central Station is the famous Red Light district. Along its streets it’s the world known window-shopping area as well as many sex shops, peep shows, brothels and a sex museum. It is forbidden to take pictures of the women and this is strictly enforced. Many police officers are usually around the area but it’s better not to go by your own.
At the heart of the city is one of Amsterdam’s oldest areas, Dam square. It was built in 1270 along with the first dam. It is usually buzzing with street performers and fun fairs as well as a famous attraction for pigeons. Take your time and grab some lunch in one of the many restaurants in the area.
Another place really worth visiting is Anne Frank’s house. Thousands come every year to visit the hiding place where Anne and her family stayed as depicted in her diary. It is also a museum dedicated to highlight all forms of persecutions and discrimination.
A visit to Amsterdam is not complete without a visit to two of the city’s most popular art museums. The Rijksmuseum collection consists of over 1,000,000 items including masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age. You can see here “The Night Watch”, Rembrandt’s renowned painting.
The Van Gogh Museum is also a must-see stop for anyone visiting Amsterdam. It houses about 200 paintings and 500 drawings by Vincent and some of his friends like Gauguin, Monet and Toulouse-Lautrec.
