Given that all Venice accommodations are way overpriced, Hotel Ala is overall very good. Pros: location (excellent access to Giglio vaporetto stop, very close to S.Marks), above-average breakfast, reasonable Wifi (1 eu/24h), front desk distributes some of the best maps of the tourist section. Cons: unbelievably small rooms and bathrooms, short bed (for someone 6' tall), high price, ran out of hot water for shower one morning at 8am, must take bags up 1 flight of stairs before (unbelievably small) elevator can be accessed.

Stayed in a lovely superior double, well furnished with a good sized bathroom.Everything was very clean. The location of the hotel is excellent, only a 5 minute walk to St Mark's Square and convenient for catching the vaporetto or water taxi. Reception staff were very helpful and arranged a free of charge trip to Murano. The hotel bar is very welcoming and cocktail prices very reasonable. I would definitely stop here again on a return visit.

The hotel was easy to find from the directions and it was well located for the main tourist spots. The staff were helpful without being intrusive and the rooms clean and comfortable. It was pretty good value for money, given the location, and I can recommend the hotel with confidence. If I go to Venice again, I shall certainly go to the same hotel.

We stayed at Ala during Carnival, as it has the perfect location half-way between St Marks and the Accademia Bridge - also being less than 100yds from the Giglio Vaporetto stop meant no lugging luggage through the crowds. Our room overlooked a canal, and while not overly large, was perfect for what we wanted. The only slight annoyance was the sound of music late into each evening, which never traced the source of. The daily cleaning was superb, for example, our daughter's pyjamas were neatly folded and left under her pillow, with her leopard carefully arranged to guard them. The other highlight was breakfast, with everything you could reasonably hope for (including toast), and some variation each day (we stayed 4 nights). We would happily stay in Ala again.

Great Breakfast with a great variety - really appreciated having toast. You could hear the water works in other rooms, but that was not too much of a problem for us. Hotel was in a great location - literally 5 minutes from San Marco. The staff were friendly and helpful - especially helping us organise theatre tickets. Would stay again!

We have got a room (superior)over the small canal and by chance with gondola & singers passing on the first day. The room was smaller than what is shown on the photos but was perfect for the small stay. The breakfast is generous with many choices. The hotel is close to San Marco (10 minutes), near all shopping areas & restaurants. We are charmed by this hotel, its neighborhood and Venezia.

After about 10 leisure visits to Venice, this was first visit on a business trip and first stay at Ala. This was known to me from pre-vious sightseeing, I knew their restaurant "Raffaele", so I had not to rely on info from the website only. Room was not too spacious, but such is common in Venice. Window looked to a wall in a very short distance, this meant practically no daylight in the room. Staff was polite and friendly, but sometimes a bit stressed, because their small desk has to care for a lot of people emerging from the big room capacity. Breakfast was exellent compared to Italian average. So was the cleanliness of room and public areas. I can recommend this hotel, although if I would prefer hotels which are open to a side canal or so, because of the view and because there is more daylight in the building.

Positive:the location is fantastic, the breakfast amaizing and the personell very helpful and friendly. Negative: the room (double "superior") was very small, not as adverise of 15-18m2, with tired decoration. It may have been considered "superior" because of the outstanding balcony, but we did not need or want or beneffit of it being out in the day and keeping in during evenings because of mosquitos and cold).

We stayed for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel staff were welcoming and helpful at all times. The room "Antonia" was well appointed and had a lounge area as well as a bedroom. The only negative was headroom due to sloping roofs and quite a small shower and toilet room. We also felt the bar prices were on the high side but this just meant we didn't drink much in the hotel! Overall I rated the hotel highly and would recommend it to visitors to Venice, if we come back we are likely to try here first.

very nice, convenient hotel to getting off the vaporetto with luggages. excellent breakfast bar & very clean, elegant place. easy walk to St. Marks Cathedral. Thanks for the nice treat to Murano Island. My daughter & I enjoyed the boat ride a lot & of course the tour to the glass factory. just one drawback was the canal smell at times were strong in the bathroom. But we enjoyed our stay at the hotel.

Location is great for a couple of days in Venice. All hotel staff very accommodating. We went with friends, and so, as we were only in Venice 2 days, did not really interact with other guests. I think this hotel caters to mostly adults of various ages, and is a great place for business meetings. I will be posting a review on TripAdviser. Jill and John Perkins San Rafael, California

We were a group of four and stayed for just one night. We checked in after we disembarked from our cruise. We stayed in two rooms: 281 & 282. Paid 110 Euro for each room. If you get a better price - book it. Both rooms were very clean but the heat in the room was overwhelming. We were there in the first week of November 2007 and it was quite chilly so the warmth was welcome, but it got hot and stuffy really fast because they were small rooms. There was no control for the heat in the room, so we opened the window for some cool, fresh air and realized our rooms were right above the bar. Sleeping that night would have been very difficult if I didn't have earplugs because the noise from the bar was very loud. This hotel is in a great location. 10-minute walking distance to St. Mark's Square and less than 5-minute walking distance to the vaparetto stop, Giglio. The buffet breakfast was good. Nice selection of breads, fruits, cereals, juice, coffee and teas.

Best hotel I've stayed in in Venice, in recent years. Friendly reception. Helpful staff. We had a lovely view of the campo (piazza). With the windows closed, it was quiet. With them open, we could hear the chatter of pedestrians and the bells of the church (Giglio). Very easy walk from the vaporetto--if you are coming from the station (line 1). Convenient to San Marco and Accademia, and not at all far from Rialto. Great linens. Nice bath. Cozy. I could stay here for a long time, if I could afford it!

I cannot recommend the Hotel Ala highly enough for travellers on a budget who want to stay in a central Venice position. Yes, the rooms are small. However, it's only a three star hotel and the price for the area reflects this. The location is excellent. It is a 5-10 minute walk from St Mark's Square and a 1-minute walk to the public water transport along the Grand Canal. It is situated in a lovely square and is within walking distance of reasonably-priced restaurants. The rooms all had touches of luxury, like ornate glass chandeliers. Generally European hotels have no tea or coffee facilities in rooms, but Hotel Ala brought up hot water and coffee/tea bags on request! I travelled with three friends and we all say we would return there if ever we visit Venice again.

Location is great and very convenient to the vaporetto stops- you don't have to drag your luggage over any bridges or steps from the boat to the hotel. Breakfast is amazing and was the best on our whole trip. Everything was really great about the overall experience with the exception of the horrible pillows on the bed (everyone was complaining) and the air conditioning did not work very well. Otherwise we would highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed two nights at the Hotel Ala and was very pleased. We had two large rooms overlooking a small canal and were treated to free concerts from the gondolas passing beneath our windows. There's roof top deck where you can look over the roof tops and hear the bells of San Stefano and the Campanile in the late afternoon. The location is great, with an easy walk to San Marco and the Accademia. The staff was helpful and professional and the breakfast spread was very good.

When we arrived the bellman opened the shutters in our room. We looked out, onto the canal, as a gondola floated by, with the gondolier singing. It was a magical moment! What a way to begin our first trip to Venice. This hotel was very central to everything. Close to San Marco; 1 block from the Vaporetto; lots of restaurants and shopping.

Very good hotel comparing to Venezian standard. Excellent location, close to San Marco. Very easy to find: a short walk up from the Giglio vaporetto station No. 1 to the square. Room and facilities near perfect. The best itinery from Marco Polo Airport: bus (3 euros) to Piazzale Roma, from there take Vaporetto No. 1. (6 euros). Fast, easy, cheap, comfortable. Breakfast was good, but only with limited choice after 10. Cocktails in the bar are fine, we liked them...

We were very pleased with the hotel. Great location, friendly staff, the room was very well cleaned and the breakfast was exceptional. There was a bit of noise from guests arguing in the next room and luckily they only stayed one night. We were in the roof and so couldn't see out of the velux but we didn't come to Venice to look out of the window. We've stayed in Venice many times and this was a good quality hotel that was excellent value for money. We were travelling with our adult daughter and she was given a double room close to ours instead of the single we paid for. We would definitely stay here again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to family & friends.

My elderly mother and I were in Venice for 4 days. I booked a "superior" room which I assumed was much bigger based on the photos online. Our room was not even photographed on the website as it turns out! Our room was the SMALLEST room I have EVER stayed in throughout all of Italy at $250 Euros ($400 USD)per night! I questioned it several times at the front desk since I was sure there was some mistake but they assured me that I had indeed received a Superior room! The cleaning lady was the one who told me otherwise, confirming my suspicions. She showed me a superior room. There was NOTHING superior about our room. We had no place to put anything. Our suitcases would not roll between the bottom of the bed and the wall. The closet was extremely small, nightstands were totally useless since they were miniature, and we couldn't even put things under the bed unless it was a pair of shoes. There was MAYBE ONE foot between our bed and the side wall. We ended up moving all the furniture around just to make room for a place to stack our suitcases. Unfortunately, I did not have a photo to show them when I disputed all of this...only my confirmation information. I should have just checked out and would have if my mother weren't with me. But trying to suddenly find a room in Venice is almost impossible. I have been there many times and I have never had a room like this. The bathroom was also small but that is typical in Italy. The best part about this hotel was its location. There are NO steps to deal with at the Vaporetto stop adjacent to the hotel and the private water taxi can arrive right up to the hotel. It's too bad about the room because it looked so beautiful online and I was so excited to see it! If it weren't for that, I would stay there again. I feel I was really ripped off. I got very little for my money, especially with the exchange rate the way it is right now. My advice to everyone, is IF you book this hotel....bring a photo of the room you supposedly booked!

Overall a nice place to stay, a little pricey but it is Venice. Breakfast is good with a large selection, rooms are clean and spacious and internet is available even if a little to expensive. Located in a good area and close to all the main sites. The extra for a room with a view not really worth it unless you get a room with a balcony and there aren't many.

I booked Hotel Ala eight months in advance and received my Venere confirmation. When we arrived the hotel had no record of our reservation, which was very odd because past reservations through Venere had always gone smoothly. Nonetheless this was no problem for the hotel - they immediately and without hesitation found us a very pretty room with gesso-ed walls, a marble mantle, and excellent air conditioning. An excellent, central location; a great breakfast; helpful staff in a wholly Venetian setting. Can't ask for much more.

Hotel Ala was exactly as we expected it to be from the description given by Venere.com. Location was great!!! As was the food and services. Caution to those who stay at the hotel... be sure your air conditioner is working in your room as you do NOT want to leave your windows open at any time of day. My family was infested by mosquitos during their first night in Venice (in April). The weather was hot and because hotel is on a inside canal with very still water the mosquitos were out in abundance. The hotel staff did move us very quickly to another room and refunded a portion of a night stay. Rooms were large and beautifully decorated for a Venice hotel . The bathrooms are all newly renovated and are extremely spacious and up-to-date. Great Showers & bath-tubs. The breakfast selection was larger than most hotels in Italy and very tasty. Excellent coffee. I would definitely stay again at Hotel Ala.

Very convenient location, just one minute from Vaporetto stop "Giglio" and five minutes walk to San Marco. Rooms well appointed, clean and comfortable. One room overlooked a small canal, and was very quiet, but the other at front of hotel opened onto Square which was noisy some nights. Breakfast was excellent, plentiful and a very wide range. There is a pleasant bar and other public areas. Overall we found Hotel Ala hard to fault and would recommend.

Enjoyed our stay at Ala very much. Found it exactly as earlier comments on here had led us to expect: very comfortable and attractive; brilliant location; great breakfasts. Major refurbishment is still going on (we visited March 2007)in one of the bedroom corridors (no guests presently being accomodated along here -- obviously); but this caused remarkably little disturbance to us. (Work taking place during the day, when you are presumably not in hotel, anyway). Very impressed by standards of cleanliness in rooms -- we were travelling with a twenty-month-old baby, and the friendly chambermaids did a great job clearing up the messes he unfortunately made in the room. Was wonderfully convenient to be able to step out of hotel immediately into a water taxi to get you to the airport at holiday's end. A couple of our group members were disturbed by noise from outside, during the night: their rooms were very hot (hotel seemed unable to control this) and so they opened windows. Since these rooms backed onto the canal, they were also then badly bitten by mosquitoes -- not the hotel's fault, of course, but I do recommend you pack anti-bug spray so you do not wind up similarly bitten. (Hotel had anti-bug wipes in bedrooms, but we did not find these very effective). Our rooms had to be reached by combination of elevator and stairs -- the latter difficult for a baby stroller; but (at hotel's suggestion) we simply parked our stroller in a cubby-hole corner of the hotel lounge, which worked well. (Incidentally, it's not a lot of fun pushing a stroller around Venice -- all those bridges with steps up and down! On reflection, it's probably easier to use, around Venice, one of those strap-on baby carriers that attach the baby to your body). All in all, a great hotel for the price. I have no hesitation in highly recommending it.

If you look for a nice place to stay in Venezia for a long we, don't search, you have the perfect one. All my family (parents, cousin) stay to this nice hotel and recommend to each other. So, what can I say more ? Maybe that my Fiancee forgot a small jewelery and the employees gave it back to us when we came back to leave the hotel, without being aware that we lost it. Next trip to Venezia, we will stay again in Ala.

The first room we were given here was very noisy with outside noise from the square and inside noise from everyone walking up marble stairs and congregating at the top (outside our door) for a conversation! On request, the hotel staff shifted us to a great room on the 4th floor on the side overlooking a small canal (not really a view as the balcony wall was high, but much reduced noise). Location of the hotel was great - very close to vaporetta stop and many restaurants, sights etc within the close surroundings (10 min walk). Breakfasts were excellent - good range of food and plentiful, good quality.

Since our last visit the Ala has opened a bar on the Ground Floor. This is an extremely good bar, indeed the best that my wife and I have seen in an hotel of the Ala's type. The Ala is wonderfully located, and we shall continue to use and to recommend it. Only two small points to make: our room was a little small; the brightness of the lighting in the breakfast rooms was rather hard to deal with early in the morning!

We spend four nigths at the hotel, and we realy have a very good time. The staff was kindly and efficient. Good breakfast. And the bar was also a quiet and fiendly place to stay. The hotel was located about four blocks from S. Marcos square, and the vaporetto stop was about 100 mts from the main hotel entrance. We realy enjoyed our stay there and if we should visit Venezia again, we should use the Ala hotel and the Venere sistem to reserve it. I am fifty seven years old and my wife fifty five.

I stayed at Ala with my 12 years old daughter. We had a double superior room with a balcony on the side canal. Our room was very quiet, clean and nice. I was very pleased with the maid and other hotel staff. The breakfast buffet was excellent. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Ala. It was just what we needed and more. Our room (double deluxe) was very nice and was appointed with antique furniture. The floor was wood with attractive decorative patterns. The bathroom was large and attractive. As a bonus we had an ice machine in the hall, a first in Italy or Europe for us. The breakfasts were excellent. Good variety, food, service, served in an attractive room. The check-in was easy and enough English was spoken by attendants at the desk. The hotel was perfectly located near the Grand Canal vaporetto stop and was a short 5-7 minutes to St. Mark's Square. In short, we really liked it and would return in a heartbeat.

Nothing was too much trouble for the front desk staff, they booked restuarants, got water taxis and were generally very helpful. Add the superb location just 30 seconds walk from the vaporetti and minutes from San marco and this hotel is a real find.

A friend told us about this hotel. It is a short walk down a narrow walkway from the vaporetto drop to the square in front of the hotel. The staff was very helpful. We received a room on the corner overlooking a small canal and the corner of the square. At night we listened to a wonderfoul opera singer in the square. The bed was hard (as I think they all are in Italy), and the shower is tiny ( the curtain clung to my back). The Hotel Ala was a short walk to San Marcos Square. I will consider the property should I visit Venice again.

The best part about Ala was the location. We requested one of only a handful of rooms that has a small balcony on the side canal. Great place to see and hear the gondolas go by. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

We were a group of eight people staying at Hotel Ala and NOT one of us had a complaint. The hotel is beautifully run, sparkingly clean, with an air of elegance that is delighful. The location is fantastic. And, the buffet breakfast was so fresh and so good to look at, that I wanted to eat everything! Grazie Hotel Ala--tutti molto bene! Frances Monaco P.S. Wish I could come back domani!

Good choice for severalreasons, but a little pricey. The deluxe room was comfortable, 3 windows, two small balconies for flower pots, adequately sized double bed, good bath. We were ready for a cracker box and were pleasantly surprised. Breakfast is best that I have had, bar opens at 4 and is unremarkable. They stored our bags between checkout time and leaving, a big plus. Staff professional. Good location, next to shopping, Harry's Bar is close as is St. Marks. We made it to Harry's. good solid hotel, well appointed and comfortable. You can do a lot worse. Enjoy.

Ala is part of the Best Western hotel chain. It was very easy to find, just 30 seconds far from the "Giglio" line 1-stop (vaporetto grand canale) on a campo (means "square"). 5 minutes far from the Tourist office on square San Marco. 2 minutes far from the campo Sto Stephano where you can drink very nice coffee & hearing very good street musicians. Staff was very dedicated to help me find some typical places to eat or how to reach the airport. Plenty of nice things for breakfast and fresh food. I really recommend it!

Some confusion at check-in with the specific reservation due to an initial credit card number entry error, however, this was handled beautifully and we were given a great room at a much reduced rate. Super help with our 'too many and too heavy' bags, and they were moved to a really super room for our second night. Great breakfasts, good guidance and advice from the front desk, friendly, neat trip to Murano. We would certainly stay there again.

We booked 2 months before arrival, special occassion. We requested as per hotel Ala's many website no smoking rooms and close together, did not happen. After a long tiring journey from the UK arriving at 2235 we asked for food or help to find a restaurant, no help given, no help with luggage to room. Tried to pay bill one day early this was made very difficult. Breakfast was very poor, small room, poor selection and never any hot coffee or fesh bread/rolls, The buffett had always just run out!!!!!No matter what time we tried to eat. The breakfast room should have been open at 0700 but on our last morning we had to insist at 0710 for it to be open.Big mistake service was not forthcoming. We were in a hurry to leave for the airport and ofcourse hotel Ala. No time for breakfast and service was even worse and the staff did not wwant to serve us. The hotel bedroom at 150euros for two adults per night was very small and only just adequate. The shower room was poorly fitted with nothing quite in the right place. The breakfast was poor, did not want to try the restaurant for dinner which was very expensive. For our 30th wedding anniversay Hotel Ala fell very short or expectations. My reccommendation as a hotel proprietor is to give it a miss

This is a great little hotel. As a newcomer to Venice, though modest it was in a lovely location, central right next to the Gritti Palace and near the canal but not too busy. The rooms were clean though our double room was a bit cramped, but we had a wonderful balcony overlooking a canal which was a real bonus. I'm glad I read the other reviews on this site, they were accurate and didn't let us down. I'd defiantely go there again.

Whilst it may have lacked the cosy warmth of a small well-run hotel, this was a superb place to stay. The staff were friendly, professional and attentive with great service - especially the free tea/coffee brought to your room. And the room itself was a touch small, but wonderful - clean with en-suite bathroom, great shower and a canal view. Breakfast was good and plentiful with a selection of cereals, cheeses, meats, breads, fruits and yoghurts. This was very handy as my wife is Coeliac and cannot eat gluten (found in wheat) so the fruits were a big hit. (In fact, if you're planning on visiting the islands, the lace island Burano has a fantastic restaurant called Gato Nero that serve gluten free pasta. My wife loved her delicious gluten free spaghetti bolognese whilst I had a homemade pasta taglietelli with spider crab that I haven't stooped raving about). Well worth the trip to the island. To top it all the hotel location was perfect: minutes walk from St Mark's Square, right next to a Vaporetto (water bus) stop and situated in a small square next to a beautiful church. And if you're interested in glass check out the unbelievable chandelier in reception. All in all we had a fantastic time and would definitely go again. 10 out of 10. Thanks for a great stay.

Based on a famiy member's recommendation, Hotel Ala was perfect for our first night after a long day of travel. It is conveniently located, yet housed in a quiet area off the main canal. Our reservation requests were granted in advance. We have recommended it to others in our family who are visiting Italy this spring.

we had alovely room whcih overlooked the canal which runs alongside the hotel. Although this meant our room wasn't quiet this was a bonus as we had gonolas passing with singers and musicians, which was breathtaking! We went on the free trip to the glass island, and while this was well organised on the way there we noticed that those who bought some of the very expensive glass got taxis quicker than those of us who later found cheaper glass on the main island. The hotel is clean and friendly, and our room was very spacous and perfect for the 4 nights we were there!

We think the Ala is perfectly located within the city. Easy to walk to nearly everything. Excellent breakfasts too. The staff was very competent and friendly. Our room was billed as "deluxe" but was in fact, rather small and the bathroom very compact; however, the bed was quite firm (no sagging!) and we were able to sleep well. Overall, a great experience—we'd go back.

Very easy access from the vaporetto stop, bus leaves you about 60 meters from the hotel without having to go over bridges with the luggage an important consideration when arriving or leaving Venice! Very pleasant and helpful staff. Very good buffet breakfast with plenty of choice. Some problems if you have the top floor rooms we were never able to have a decent shower it was either cold with strong flow or luke-warm with a dribble. I don't know if other rooms also experienced similar problems.

Our room was lovely and very clean, the breakfasts were great although the reception staff weren't especially friendly. Our holiday started with a warm and genuine welcome. This set the tone for the quality of service we received during the remainder of our stay. The friendly and helpful attitude was from the bell boy all the way upto the manager. Great size rooms (superior) and great dual aspect views on the upper floor. The massive breakfast was a huge plus, setting you up nicely for the remainder of the day. All in all a great place to stay for a long weekend in Venice. Can't recommend the Ala highly enough...
