Best Western Kampen Hotell - Oslo

We ordered a quiet room, butt got the noisiest rom in the Hotel right above the main door, the ventilation system was bad, the kitchen sink smelled like septic, and there was a lot of dust under the bed and on top off the closets. There was no one in the reception that could speak Norwegian, and just a little English.

We had a quite small double room facing a busy street. With closed windows the noise was bearable, but I guess we were lucky that it was late summer and cool already (no air conditioning). The door to the balcony was hard to close properly and when open threatened to become unhinged. The hotel has a rather peculiar design with smooth, grayish plastic surfaces and blueish LED lighting abounding. Not to everyone's taste. As usual in Oslo, the price-quality relation is rather poor: a small souble room with maintenance issues and no breakfast for 1075 NOK is hardly cheap. The problem is that it costs a fortune in this city to live a notch better. On the plus side: free internet is included and Toyen subway station is very close, as is the Munch museum.

My wife and I were very impressed by the Kampen Hotel. It is 2 blocks from the Munch art museum (which has free admission). It is a block from the Toyen T-bahn train station. Just next to the hotel is a 7-11 shop which sells the various public transport tickets – we bought the 7 day tickets for 200 Norwegian Krone each. All the various rail lines join at Toyen and so there is a train every few minutes. The next station is Gronland where we did all our shopping. The next station is the central railway station, then the parliament (Stortinget), then the National Theater with easy access to the various art galleries and museums and then the shops around Majorstuen. So although the hotel is very reasonably priced, it allows easy access to all the main areas of Oslo. The rooms on the side facing away from the road are quieter. The included breakfast was simple but good. The hotel also provides free fast broadband wireless internet. I’d recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Oslo.

My room 6001 stank of cigarette smoke continually like it was coming to through the ventilation system all night and the next morning until I checked out. I complained about this and was told that it was impossible to move as there were no rooms. I even got the receptionist to acknowledge that yes, indeed, it smelt of smoke but there was nothing they could do. "open the doors" she said helpfully (it was minus eight outside). Also, the bathroom basin had no hot water. The bed was comfortable.

The only problem is the lack of a restaurant. only breakfast is avaialable. For everything else it is an excellent choice
