Simple hotel, excellent location just a few steps from the main streets in the no traffic zone. Small rooms, but OK for visiting the city. Very poor public spaces (lobby etc.)

Ottima la posizione dell' hotel, ottimo punto di partenza per visitare la città graze alla sua centralità. Le camere sono molto pulite, alcune piccoline ma confertevoli altre più spaziose. Nel complesso raccomando a tutti questa struttura.

We asked for a quiet room and were initially placed in a dark, dreary room facing an air shaft. We took a gamble on a more cheerful, sunny and larger room facing the street, even though the bell hop warned it was very noisy. We were pleasantly surprised to find that noise was not a problem at all, at least during our 3-night stay.

Very close to Sol Square. Prado within walking distance, very central. Big El corte ingles very close. Sol Square a little seedy.

The breakfast was not worth 9 euros. We went down the street and had a better one for 2.50. The room had a very small window with opaque glass, which gave us the impression of being inside a hospital! We spent five nights at the hotel. The last day I asked if my husband could stay in the room until 3:15 p.m. (the time we left for the airport) since he had come down with the flu. The reception agreed to let him stay, but charged us for half a day. Considering how much we'd spent for the whole stay, I think they could have give us those few hours for free... Even a cup of coffee cost 2 euros, by the way! No freebies.

The location was excellent. Shopping and restaurants all over. Also in the middle of all the buses and metros that you needed to get around Madrid. The rooms were big enough but the furniture was oldish and squikish. The parking lot was full so they couldn't provide the service. The hair dryer didn't work but they managed to fix it one day before we left. The big down side was that it was very noisy at any hour. There was one particular street flute performer that drove us crazy by singing the same tune(only one he knew probably) all day every day. Drunk young folks were screaming on the street at night. So if you're not one of them ,in witch case i recomande this hotel, don't stay here.

We were pleasantly surprised when we got to our room and had a balcony! The location was excellent near the Puerto del Sol, and the shopping nearby (Calle Preciados and Cortes Ingles). The hotel staff was especially helpful. The only negative was our floor was never fully vacuumed.

Married retired couple (67 & 68), we spent 8 nights in room 509 (top floor at the rear of the hotel, so it was very quiet at night) Superb location for exploring central Madrid with easy access to the metro and all the galleries. Excellent ambience in the breakfast room. Breakfast adequate, but with a rather restricted choice, and rather expensive.

The hotel was easy to find from the Sol Metro stop and the people who worked at the desk were friendly and helpful. Their English was more limited than I would have expected in such a hotel in a major city. The breakfast was excellent every day and the waiter friendly and courteous. My biggest complaint was the noise from the street which went on until 1 or 2 am and was quite loud. Despite very comfortable and cool temperatures, I had to leave on my air conditioning just to be able to sleep. If you are not a night owl, then I recommend a room that is not on the street. Otherwise, a nice place for the money-very clean and staff courteous and pleasant.

First visit to Madrid. Single room. Chose the hotel due to the availability of a shuttle service from & to airport. Keep in mind to book this 24 hrs ahead. I did not & had to take the metro, which was in the end faster, much more convenient & cheaper. Excellent stay otherwise.

Positive things about the hotel are as follows - Excellent central location for sight seeing - Clean comfortable rooms Negative things about the hotel - Noisy from about 7am onwards if your room is facing the street which ours was. - The door to our room was thumped on at about 4am because some drunken French idiot forgot his room was 208 and NOT 209.(my gripe being that hotel night staff did little in the way of assisting him to his correct room and seemed content for him to thump on my door for 15mins until I lost my patience and directed him myself! ) - Dont try order a drink from your room anytime after 11pm either not even 11.01pm because you just wont get one - notwithstanding the fact they advertise a 24 hour room service of course!! I would however return to the hotel if I happended to be in Madrid again as I'd be unlikely to be as unlucky with noise a second time!

The hotel is in a very convenient position for central Madrid but, inevitably, suffers some noise at night. The otherwise efficient service was let down by the receptionist informing us that we would have to walk with our luggage to the nearest road and hail a taxi to the station - ten minutes after the one he purported to have ordered was due.

Perfect location in city centre so you have to ignore street noise. I always book hotels through Venere, some hotels include breakfast - this one didn't but maybe that is usual in Spain. As Madrid is probably the home of the cafe this is not a problem. I love this city and would recommend this hotel for it's location to shops, sights and buzz of Madrid.

We stayed in Madrid for holiday and we enjoyed a lot this hotel. It is 5 minutes from Puerta del Sol and 10 minutes from Plaza Mayor. It's also a walking distance from the Cathedral, the Castle, Austrias and very near from Sol station of the Metro. There are many stores and restaurants around it. I would stay again in the same hotel.

quite a good hotel, but: EXTREMELY LOUD (as if you're trying to sleep in the middle of a very busy street. a couple of times i was getting up in the middle of the night to shut the window, but it WAS SHUT already - this is how loud it was). ask for a room facing the backyard (not sure if there are any) or leave it.

As a part of a large chain, the Carlos V lacks the charm of a smaller hotel, but that said, our stay was fine. The breakfast was excellent the location was perfect (5 mins from Puerta del Sol) and the room was totally quiet. The bathroom is new and modern. We arranged to take the hotel shuttle bus back to the airport, but when the bus didn't show up the hotel, without our even asking, arranged to have a taxi pick us up (at hotel expense).

I chose this hotel for a weekend stay in a city I had never visited, purely on the cost and location. It turned out to be a fabulous choice! I was impressed with the staff (especially as myself and friends speak no Spanish), maid service, cleanliness, breakfast etc. Whenever we needed a taxi, the reception sorted that for us and gave us suggestions on where to go. It is in a great central location as well, near a station, shops, restaurants etc. Perfect for whatever you need and we were able to find our way home at night while extremely drunk as well! Also, the minibar was a bonus and not that expensive either! I'd stay here again.

We already knew this hotel from previous visits and chose it originally for its very central location, however the surrounding area is often very crowded and noisy, especially at weekends and we would prefer somewhere quieter in future. The staff are friendly and helpful, but the rooms are small and dark, unless you opt for a front room, which faces onto the noisy street. Some rooms at the back overlook small interior patios. Room #119 is located immediately over a noxious exhaust vent, which means you cannot open the window without filling the room with dangerous fumes. The bar/breakfast room is a pleasant area, but unfortunately, loud pop music played at all hours makes it an uncongenial place for meeting friends, relaxing with a newspaper, or even for enjoying breakfast. The management needs to consider seriously whether this is in the best interest of their clientel. I doubt that we shall stay here again on our next visit to Madrid.

We were pleased with the central location of the hotel, but the rooms were rather small. On Sat. night there was all sorts of noise coming into the room until about 6 am. the taxi driver let us out at the bottom of the street, so we were glad that we didn't have any luggage. the people were friendly and helpful.

We were three males staying in what was supposedly a triple room and this was our only complaint, as there were two double beds and a sofa, rather than singles, as we expected. Having said that, everything about the hotel was superb, we were very impressed with what we got for what we paid.

Dear Sir/Madam Your questionnaire has come at an opportune moment as I was intending to write to you anyway. On the whole I thought the Carlos V was OK or adequate but I was very unhappy with the cleanliness of my room. On one occassion the beds were only half made - the quilts were left in a heap on the floor. One night I had a canned drink in the bath & used a sachet of hair product, the next day the can and sachet were still there. There were pieces of 'stuff' on the carpet that stayed there - i.e. they were not vaccuumed away. Bottles & cups from the mini bar were not cleared away or replaced. I realise that I did not complain at the time, this was due to reticence on the part of my travelling companion who felt that a conflict would spoil their holiday. However, I think it is important that you know that a hotel that would otherwise have been fine for the price was horribly let down by laziness - frankly the room was dirty and for that reason I will not go there again. Yours Lucy Culshaw

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were impressed with the free e-mail facility on offer! The main problem was the noise factor which was due to the central situation of the hotel and not really their fault. The breakfast was excellent as was the waiter service at all times. The hotel is in an excellent position to reach all shopping and tourist areas. A bit noisy on a Saturday night but apart from that, we had a great stay. The reception staff were very welcoming and helpful, bar and breakfast staff were also really good. The one thing that didn't match to the web was that hot breakfasts are an additional cost. Overall, the hotel is very good and I would recommend it.

Apart from the room being slightly smaller than expected, the Carlos V was the perfect place to stay for a short city break. The location is very central to everything you may wish to visit. Plenty of places to eat, drink and shop all around the hotel location. We walked to most tourist sites but when we did use the underground trains they were regular and easy to navigate. We did experience some noise at night as we were overlooking the front of the hotel but a couple of extra glasses of vino cured that problem. All in all would stay there again if I returned to Madrid.

The location of this hotel is excellent and even better because it is on a street with no vehicular traffic. The first floor lounge, bar, and breakfast room is spacious and very attractive. I especially appreciated the free internet connection available to guests in a private back corner of the room. The included breakfast was very good. The only negative comment I have is that some of the desk staff were somewhat surly and acted as if giving help was intrusive to their work.

The Carols V contributed highly to the success of a girls weekend. Staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient, from arriving at the airport and using the hotel minibus to organising for the same on the return trip. Rooms (especially bathroom) were spotless.
