The room was nice and spacious but the window overlooked the kitchen's extractor fan and the smell of cooking drifted into our room. Fortunately it was an appetising smell of bread and bacon !!!

Brilliant location right in city with parking one minute away. Walk out of door and you're in the shopping district with El Cortes Ingles department store one hundred metres away. Metro very close too, plenty of options to eat etc etc. Rooms and bathrooms are clean and have lots of hot water and great heating. Stayed in winter so this was important as Madrid gets very cold. Staff were very helpful, polite and had reasonable English, which is not so common in Spain as it is in France, for example. Can highly recommend this hotel.

A very good location for the price we paid! The service from reception can do a bit of improving as we were kept waiting with the single person manning the front desk on the phone. Also the door to the single lift got stuck at the floors above and never arrived.

Hotel staff was always looking after us,polite, efficient and nice. My wife left her purse with documents, credit cards and cash, and the staff inmediately found it and kept it for 5 days in the same place of the room. Nothing was missing. Breakfast is excellent with a great variety of Spanish delights.

The hotel staff was great, very accommodating, however there really wasn't much they could offer. The hotel is old, in need of a makeover. They should have spent additional monies to update the living areas in the room as they did the bathroom. Also, I don't understand European showers. Why not have the shower head so that it can be positioned to accommodate the user, rather than placed in the middle of the tub, which requires having to hold it by hand? How, then, is one supposed to shower efficiently?

Very nice hotel, great rooms, very comfortable. Absolutely no regrets. The staff was very helpful and Hotel is located near Palace, nice restaurants and good sites. Only advise is get a intersection name and have cab drop you off at this place otherwise the thieves known as Taxi drivers will drive you around raising the tab. There are many pedestrian roads near by however, you can get right to the doorstep it just isn't easy. If possible contact hotel and get exact drving directions. You will love the hotel and breakfast is priced right.

We asked for a quiet room and were initially placed in a dark, dreary room facing an air shaft. We took a gamble on a more cheerful, sunny and larger room facing the street, even though the bell hop warned it was very noisy. We were pleasantly surprised to find that noise was not a problem at all, at least during our 3-night stay.

The breakfast was not worth 9 euros. We went down the street and had a better one for 2.50. The room had a very small window with opaque glass, which gave us the impression of being inside a hospital! We spent five nights at the hotel. The last day I asked if my husband could stay in the room until 3:15 p.m. (the time we left for the airport) since he had come down with the flu. The reception agreed to let him stay, but charged us for half a day. Considering how much we'd spent for the whole stay, I think they could have give us those few hours for free... Even a cup of coffee cost 2 euros, by the way! No freebies.

The location was excellent. Shopping and restaurants all over. Also in the middle of all the buses and metros that you needed to get around Madrid. The rooms were big enough but the furniture was oldish and squikish. The parking lot was full so they couldn't provide the service. The hair dryer didn't work but they managed to fix it one day before we left. The big down side was that it was very noisy at any hour. There was one particular street flute performer that drove us crazy by singing the same tune(only one he knew probably) all day every day. Drunk young folks were screaming on the street at night. So if you're not one of them ,in witch case i recomande this hotel, don't stay here.

Married retired couple (67 & 68), we spent 8 nights in room 509 (top floor at the rear of the hotel, so it was very quiet at night) Superb location for exploring central Madrid with easy access to the metro and all the galleries. Excellent ambience in the breakfast room. Breakfast adequate, but with a rather restricted choice, and rather expensive.

The hotel was easy to find from the Sol Metro stop and the people who worked at the desk were friendly and helpful. Their English was more limited than I would have expected in such a hotel in a major city. The breakfast was excellent every day and the waiter friendly and courteous. My biggest complaint was the noise from the street which went on until 1 or 2 am and was quite loud. Despite very comfortable and cool temperatures, I had to leave on my air conditioning just to be able to sleep. If you are not a night owl, then I recommend a room that is not on the street. Otherwise, a nice place for the money-very clean and staff courteous and pleasant.

Positive things about the hotel are as follows - Excellent central location for sight seeing - Clean comfortable rooms Negative things about the hotel - Noisy from about 7am onwards if your room is facing the street which ours was. - The door to our room was thumped on at about 4am because some drunken French idiot forgot his room was 208 and NOT 209.(my gripe being that hotel night staff did little in the way of assisting him to his correct room and seemed content for him to thump on my door for 15mins until I lost my patience and directed him myself! ) - Dont try order a drink from your room anytime after 11pm either not even 11.01pm because you just wont get one - notwithstanding the fact they advertise a 24 hour room service of course!! I would however return to the hotel if I happended to be in Madrid again as I'd be unlikely to be as unlucky with noise a second time!

The hotel is in a very convenient position for central Madrid but, inevitably, suffers some noise at night. Perfect location in city centre so you have to ignore street noise. I always book hotels through Venere, some hotels include breakfast - this one didn't but maybe that is usual in Spain. As Madrid is probably the home of the cafe this is not a problem. I love this city and would recommend this hotel for it's location to shops, sights and buzz of Madrid.

I chose this hotel for a weekend stay in a city I had never visited, purely on the cost and location. It turned out to be a fabulous choice! I was impressed with the staff (especially as myself and friends speak no Spanish), maid service, cleanliness, breakfast etc. Whenever we needed a taxi, the reception sorted that for us and gave us suggestions on where to go. It is in a great central location as well, near a station, shops, restaurants etc. Perfect for whatever you need and we were able to find our way home at night while extremely drunk as well! Also, the minibar was a bonus and not that expensive either! I'd stay here again.

We already knew this hotel from previous visits and chose it originally for its very central location, however the surrounding area is often very crowded and noisy, especially at weekends and we would prefer somewhere quieter in future. The staff are friendly and helpful, but the rooms are small and dark, unless you opt for a front room, which faces onto the noisy street. Some rooms at the back overlook small interior patios. Room #119 is located immediately over a noxious exhaust vent, which means you cannot open the window without filling the room with dangerous fumes. The bar/breakfast room is a pleasant area, but unfortunately, loud pop music played at all hours makes it an uncongenial place for meeting friends, relaxing with a newspaper, or even for enjoying breakfast. The management needs to consider seriously whether this is in the best interest of their clientel. I doubt that we shall stay here again on our next visit to Madrid.

Dear Sir/Madam Your questionnaire has come at an opportune moment as I was intending to write to you anyway. On the whole I thought the Carlos V was OK or adequate but I was very unhappy with the cleanliness of my room. On one occassion the beds were only half made - the quilts were left in a heap on the floor. One night I had a canned drink in the bath & used a sachet of hair product, the next day the can and sachet were still there. There were pieces of 'stuff' on the carpet that stayed there - i.e. they were not vaccuumed away. Bottles & cups from the mini bar were not cleared away or replaced. I realise that I did not complain at the time, this was due to reticence on the part of my travelling companion who felt that a conflict would spoil their holiday. However, I think it is important that you know that a hotel that would otherwise have been fine for the price was horribly let down by laziness - frankly the room was dirty and for that reason I will not go there again. Yours Lucy Culshaw

Too much noise... we stayed there in late November, and the Hotel is located just behind the Corte Ingles, which has a holiday show with songs and music every hour (for 20 minutes!). But overall good location (between Sol and Gran Via, perfect for shopping).

The hotel is in an excellent position to reach all shopping and tourist areas. A bit noisy on a Saturday night but apart from that, we had a great stay. The reception staff were very welcoming and helpful, bar and breakfast staff were also really good. The one thing that didn't match to the web was that hot breakfasts are an additional cost. Overall, the hotel is very good and I would recommend it.

Apart from the room being slightly smaller than expected, the Carlos V was the perfect place to stay for a short city break. The location is very central to everything you may wish to visit. Plenty of places to eat, drink and shop all around the hotel location. We walked to most tourist sites but when we did use the underground trains they were regular and easy to navigate. We did experience some noise at night as we were overlooking the front of the hotel but a couple of extra glasses of vino cured that problem. All in all would stay there again if I returned to Madrid.

Perfect location in the center of the city. Easy to reach from the airport by subway. Just a couple of minutes away from the subway station. Small but clean rooms equipt with an effective aircondition. Generous breakfast buffet.

This hotel is a great value and the location is perfect. It was far better than 2 other Best Western 3 star hotels we stayed at during or vacation.

The location of this hotel is excellent and even better because it is on a street with no vehicular traffic. The first floor lounge, bar, and breakfast room is spacious and very attractive. I especially appreciated the free internet connection available to guests in a private back corner of the room. The included breakfast was very good. The only negative comment I have is that some of the desk staff were somewhat surly and acted as if giving help was intrusive to their work.

Very well situated, close to all major attractions and a metro station. Comfortable hotel and friendly staff. Bathroom was clean and fairly big. Good value.

We had booked a 4-day stay and then called to cancel our first day when we couldn't reach Madrid that day. They didn't charge us for that day, to our surprise. Thus, a great value. Very helpful staff and convenient location, though you pay for that convenience with street noise.

The Carols V contributed highly to the success of a girls weekend. Staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient, from arriving at the airport and using the hotel minibus to organising for the same on the return trip. Rooms (especially bathroom) were spotless. Breakfast ample served in pleasant surroundings. Only downside was the noise at night but what can you expect from such a central hotel located in the country's capital on a weekend? Great stay, would recommend.

Excellent hotel in superb location (as long as you don't mind street noise). Desk personnel not particularly welcoming, but the dining room and bar staff always friendly. Most staff speak excellent English and all trannsactions dealt with efficiently. This was our second visit to this hotel and we will return there again. Overall rating - excellent.
