Hotel Reviews Surprising in Rome

Germany, Jun 2010
Excellent location, in a walking distance from many of the attractions in the center from the Fori imperiali to the Vatican. Tenant is ready to help and a source of good tips on where to go, he tried the places himself and you can trust his taste. Indeed the street is very busy, and the windows don't stop the noise, but in general if you look for a relaxing stay you shouldn't chosse Rome.

We enjoyed very much our stay in Rome! The B&B is a great place to stay: very central location to the different city area, nice breakfast, (free) wireless internet, umbrella's(if ever it rains...)... Non doubt the street noise is very high, it's written in al the reviews I guess.. Use of earplugs for spleeping is necessary and they are foreseen by the host. As far as we were concerned, we have been able a good rest and had problem to find the sleep. Giuseppe, who runs the B&B, ensures you get a warm welcome, shares a list of nice addresses and make sure you have a pleasant stay! Looking forward to come back there soon! PS: don't try to find out where they have the best ice-cream around... just ask Giuseppe

Very friendly and welcoming; except for the noise the place is idealistic !

Giuseppe was helpful and gave us great information. The B&B was central to everything and it was easy to walk to all the great sites. There is some street noise, and earplugs were provided, but we did not need them. It wasn't that loud. This was our first trip to Rome, and our first stay in a B&B, and Giuseppe made it all pleasant and enjoyable. We will stay there if we visit Rome again.

Everything was almost perfect very warm welcome stylish and refined decoration excellent location but you can be bothered by street noise, windows would need to be changed or you have to sleep with ear plugs.

Our experience staying at Surprising in Rome was just right for what we needed. It is very central and walking distance to most of the attractions. If you need to take a bus, there is one right at the front door. Guiseppe was very friendly and accomodated all of our needs. A full breakfast was on offer every day and the kitchen was equipped. The property was serviced by a housekeeper everyday so was clean which is important. Our only issue was with noise. Unfortunately the property is on the main road so if you are looking for a place with some serenity, this is not it. Guiseppe does provide ear plugs!

The owner was very friendly and helpful in many aspects. The location is very convenient but noisy at night. There was a few hiccups in hotwater supply during our stay of 4 days but oveall it was fine.

My friend and I were extremely pleased with our stay at Surprising. Guiseppe went out of his way to make us comfortable. He made a reservation for us at Villa Borghese, helped with travel and restaurant recommendations. He provided a full range of breakfast foods and would have cooked for us if we wanted. The B&B is a very short walk from the Tiber and Castel St'Angelo. We walked to Piazza Nivona and used buses for more distant places. We loved the place and would use it again.

I totally enjoyed my 4 day stay at Surprising in Rome. It was a clean and well presented B&B and Giuseppe was extremely friendly and helpful. The location is central to many interesting parts of Rome and the bus stops are right outside. I would stay there again and recommend this B&B to my friends.

I thought the room was great, it was big for a European hotel and very clean. The host (Giuseppe) was real friendly and willing to help with anything we needed. On arrival he gave recommendations to restaurants and best walking routes to take; we mentioned to him we wanted to rent a Vespa for a day and he found us two local rental places and prices He even did laundry for me one day for no extra charge which was great. The only thing I did not realize is the bathroom, while private, is not in the room so you need to walk out in the hallway to access it. This was not a big deal since our floor and suite area only had one other room with two guests. The breakfast was self serve with a full kitchen. I enjoyed this since I like to cook and every morning Giuseppe had fresh bread, eggs, cheese and beverages for us in addition to cereals, biscuits and other items. The location was great, in walking distance to all the sights. It was a little loud at night since the hotel is on a fairly busy street but we did not have any trouble sleeping. I would stay here again and would recommend it to friends and family who are visiting Rome.

Warm welcome from Giuseppe who took the time to explain us a lot of things (facilities, surroundings, visits, etc.). The room was spacious and clean but a bit noisy due to corso Vittorio Emmanuel II, but this didn't disturb us at all (anyway, some earplugs are available in the room if needed!). Breakfast is huge and at your disposal. To conclude the B&B is perfectly situated to visit historic center of Rome, very comfortable and the owner very nice (and english speaking).

It was our first time in Rome! It was excellent room full of facilities. You should know that there is one bathroom for each room but it's outside the room! I personally don't think of it as disadvantage! Room's decoration is great! The room is much better comparing to the photos on the webpage! The location is excellent. In the center! You can go in many places on foot. The restaurants next to the corner are great with reasonable prices! We strongly recommended it!

This place is great. The location is perfect. There is a lot written about the noise but we found it to be no problem. Any slight negative presented by being on a busy street are completely outweighed by all the positives.

Notre séjour à Rome fut excellent en grande partie grâce à Giuseppe qui a sut nous accueillir et nous guider tout au long de notre séjour. Our stay in Rome was excellent due to Guiseppe who guide and advise us about where to eat and what to visit on each day ! The BB is very well placed and we have never taken a Bus or Subway. All our visit was done by walking. Just near the BB you have many restaurant and the Vatican is about 5 mn walking ! It is a very fantastic place and I have recommand to all my friends and familly.

Giuseppe met us and had a map that he put places of interest on and suggested restaurants. He was very knowledgable and happy to help in any way he could. He does not live there. The room was clean, roomy and homey. The only thing was the bathroom was private but down the hall so you need to take a housecoat. Central location - everything was walkable. The only drawback was the noise from the street but it didn't bother us. You had to make your own breakfast but there was lots to choose from. He had a well stocked frig and bread was fresh daily.

We were a little aprehensive to stay at a b & b in Rome but were so pleasantly surprised that it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Our host was excellent and gave us some really great local information and even advised us on the order in which we should see the many sights of Rome which worked perfectly for us. We will definately return to Surprising in Rome next time we visit!!

Great place, especially for the price! Beds were comfortable, service was friendly, location is excellent for tourists. There was a bit of a language barrier (only Guiseppe speaks English, and not perfectly) but we got through alright. It was peaceful and nice (with earplugs and the window shut tight!)

This is an excellent place to stay if you want to be in the centre, within walking distance of all the sights. Brilliant if travelling with another couple as we did. It was just like having your own appartment. It was noisy but this was explained to us before we booked, ear plugs provided and to be honest it did not bother us at all. Guiseppe was a great host and gave great advise. We will definitely return there next time we're in Rome

This is wonderful B&B with well decorated, spacious, clean bedrooms (one of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in), and marble bathrooms. Guiseppe is a FANTASTIC host, he greeted us with a bottle of wine and sat down with us to map out walking tours, great restaurant suggestions, and unique spots to experience traditional Rome, all catered to our preferences and intentions for the weekend. He provided an excellent breakfast laid out with many options, and kept fresh bread, cheese, and meats for our afternoon snack. The view of the street from the 4th floor room is great and the location is prime! The bus to the train station stops directly in front of the building, but besides heading to/from the airport we never needed transportation. The B&B is centrally located (seriously about a 15/20 min walk everywhere) to the can't miss sights (Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Fontana di Trevi, Spanish Steps, the Vatican, the Roman Forum/Colluseum, Trastevere, Tiber River) and great side streets with small, authentic restaurants and shops. It is just steps from Campo De Fiori which was our favorite Piazza to end the night- lots of restaurants and cafes with all the locals. We went just for a quick weekend trip, and I am convinced our wonderful time was made possible by Guiseppe! We would not even consider staying somewhere else next time in Rome. Price is also very reasonable considering all of the conveniences and attention you receive. By the end of the weekend we were ready to move in!

A very well situated B&B where we were very well taken care of by Giuseppe. Already before we started our trip to Romhe informed us, by mail, about the best and cheepest way to get to the hotel. At the arrival made us feel very welcome and gave us a lot of useful information regarding restaurants, bars, sight-seeing and shopping. In short terms: It was a super-stay!

Terrific location with very large room. B&B only has two rooms available making service very personalized. You feel you're sharing an apartment with the friendly owner, Giuseppe, who is eager to provide helpful tips and assist with museum and other reservations. Large bathroom is down the hall, but each room has their own private one. A substantial and excellent variety of food for breakfast, including eggs, cereal, fruit, cheeses, meat, juice, coffee and fantastic country bread. The rooms face a noisy street, but I wasn't bothered and my companion was Ok with earplugs. Less privacy than a traditional hotel, but we thought the extra space and being able to interact with a real Roman was well worth the tradeoff.

Great location, great value for money. Giuseppe was very hospitable and helpful and provided lots of useful information. The room was large and comfortable and so was the bathroom. There is a washing machine and even a microwave for guests to use. The B&B is on the 4th floor of a building, but there is a lift, (although quite tiny). The breakfast offered good choice of food. There is a supermarket next door and the bus stop is only few meters from the building. Even with the shutters closed, the room was a bit noisy since it overlooks one of the main streets in Rome. However, this wasn't a major concern and the location of the B&B more than compensated for it. The only criticism we have is that towels and bedlinen could've been changed more often (unless there was an expectation that we will wash them ourselves?). Overall, the facilities and the service were very good and we'd have no hesitation to recommend this property to other travellers. We will certainly stay there next time we're in Rome.

You cannot find a better location to visit all of the top spots in Rome. Giuseppe & Sabrina are delightful and very helpful. When you arrive, Giuseppe will sit down with you and recommend the best ways to get from point to point on foot as well as the best places to eat. Trust him, his regular job a host at a restaurant so he knows his food. What's more is that included in your stay is a full breakfast with cereal, milk, juice, fresh cooked scrambled eggs with Parmesan cheese, salami, cheeses, fruit, coffee, tea, and other foods. Also the price pretty much includes your water and everything else. They don't try to nickel and dime you like most hotels. Sabrina even did laundry for us and hung it on the roof to dry for us. She let us up on the roof to enjoy the view of Rome at night...a feast for the eyes and ears. This is not like staying in a hotel or anything like that. You are actually living in a Giuseppe & Sabrina's home (which is a very nice place). We had our own private bathroom that was gorgeous (covered in white and black marble) and the room was very nice, outfitted with a very comfortable stylish Italian bed surrounded by antique dressers, desks, doors and everything else. Like I said, the location is perfect...about 10-15 minute leisurely walk to the Vatican in one direction. The other direction leads you to Piazza Nuova, the Pantheon (Rotunda), Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps. If the weather is too hot, jump on the bus, you'll be just about anywhere in a few minutes. Ask Giuseppe about Antica Taverna near the B&B. Once you get there, order the Spaghetti Amatriciana and enjoy. Eat each individual strand slowly and savor the taste...I miss it already! The only minus is the street noise. It really didn't bother us, but it is a factor. Giuseppe and Sabrina know about this and provide earplugs which do the trick. I would say it's not even a concern and I would not hesitate to return to live with them again.

As it was our first visit to Rome, we wanted to be at the heart of the city. The "Surprising In Rome" is ideally situated and within walking distance of everything that we wanted to see. As it is on the main road, some noise is to be expected, but it didn't disturb us at all. Hospitality is outstanding. We look forward to visiting Rome again and wouldn't look to stay anywhere else.

We spent 3 days in Rome, every morning a different wake up hour, but our guests always cooked a delicious and very generous breakfast! this was very important for us and really appreciated! :) the only suggestion we can do is this: make available a TV in the rooms. Even if, you know, when you come to Rome, you don't have actually so much time to spent in front of a tv...

Recomendable.

The owners are very friendly and willing to help arrange transportation, museum reservations, etc. The location is great for walking around the Vatican and the Ancient City. Our stay here was miserable, however, due to the noise from the streets. Also, the bathroom is small and near the kitchen so don't expect much privacy.

We really enjoyed our stay at Surprising in Rome. They were very helpful and accommodating and the bedroom and breakfast room were nicely decorated and very comfortable. You have your own bathroom but it is not ensuite, something we did not expect. The breakfast is the best we had in Italy. Ear plugs are a must until guiseppie sorts out his new windows. It's on the 4th floor but on a busy road. Wouldn't have traded the location though. Thanks again!

The spacious and nicely decorated room with private marble bathroom is placed in a huge 19th century city palace. You just choose your time for breakfast and can choose from a variety of offerings, from tea, coffee, juice, brioches, fruit, bread, cheese, sausages etc. If you need assistance to plan your sightseeing tour the owner is more than pleased to help you. Every major attractions, from Vatican to the historic centre are in walking distance. And there are a number of nice bars and restaurants for the evenings as well. If you arrive at Stazione Termini, there's a direct bus to the place: # 64. I can only recommend to stay at Surprising in Rome B&B. The only negative thing is that Corso Vittorio Emmanuele is one the major traffic routes through the city centre. So bring your ear plugs and keep the windows shut at night.

A 3-star hotel with bathroom en suite, full breakfast, daily maid service, and in historic center on quiet street was 10% less. Price did not reflect low season/high availability. Description does not make clear that bathroom is down hall; picture of bathroom shows bathtub, but one bathroom is only shower. Bedroom is on VERY noisy street.

We had travelled for 24 hours to get to Rome and were grateful for the warm welcome and great room. There is some street noise from traffic but really in Italy you have to expect that everywhere. It did not bother us as we were dead tired each day after walking a long way. It is in a great location - walking distance to the Vatican and other great sites. It is a great and affordable place to stay. Please try it.
