Bed and Breakfast Il Giardino Pensile - Ostia Antica, Rome

Do NOT stay here unless you are coming by car and want to pay a lot for a room in a suburban house owned by clueless hosts. The "five minute walk from the train station" is a 45 minute walk via a busy highway with no sidewalks. We arrived from Rome at dusk and there was no taxi service at the station and the ticket kiosk for local buses was closed. A kind bus driver dropped us off at an intersection one quarter mile away from the B&B for free. When we said that we had had no supper, the young owner, Marco, said that there was a pizzaria "5 minutes walk." It took 20, and it was located on the scary, busy highway that had no street lights. Internet was inaccessible in our room, but was available in the small breakfast room the next morning. We had to ask Marco for a fan to cool our very hot, non-airconditioned room.The hot water had been turned off for the night when we got in from supper, so there was no bathing after our long day. And breakfast consisted of coffee, toast, yogurt, Tang and cellophane-wrapped cookies in a basket. Price is 84 euros, including tax. Marco's mother who laid our breakfast was nice, but even after all our difficulties (poor directions, no internet or hot water), said she would ask her husband to serve as our taxi back to the city for an additional 6 euros. In our many years of travel, this was by far our worst B&B experience.

Perfect place to stay in the suburbs of Rome. Close to ruins of Ostia Antica. Train to Rome is convenient, easy and costs only 1 euro each way. I highly recommend this bed and breakfast.

Great place to stay. Very quiet in a nice suburban setting. Train is nearby. There's also a good restaurant with pizza and steak nearby. Very good. This hotel is also convenient for the ruins of Ostia Antica. I would stay there again.

Excellent people. Surprisingly luxurious and clear house - unlike most of the B&Bs - it is like you are a guest for some rich people... suburban location and no restaurant nearby Close to the airport (20 minutes). Useless with out a car.

My wife and I were very happy with our well-appointed room and the hospitality of the owners, even though we arrived late at night and left early the next morning. The only drawback was the numbering on the street. It seems that street numbers were allocated as homes were constructed, leaving a patchwork of numbers that did not have a logical progression. Arriving late at night, it was a little frustrating to drive up and down the street looking for the right house. That said, it was a very nice stay in a neighborhood especially rich in history.

The family who runs the place, was very nice with us, they even came by car to pick us up at the train station with our luggage, and because it was raining. They also brought us back to the train station. When you leave, have cash, because they don't receive cards. The only problem is public transport, if you don't have a car. There is a circular bus line, which runs from Ostia Antica village centre within 5 minutes to the bus stop, which is near to the house, but to go back, you have to take the same bus in the same direction, which take half an hour back to Ostia Antica, running a long loop through other places. It's faster to walk 20 minutes, but it is along a narrow, relatively busy road, and there is no option. In other words: If you have a car or a bicycle, the place is very nice.
