This is a fantastic villa. A true Tuscan experience - from the windy single lane road to the villa, to the historic villa itself, the grounds and the surrounding countryside. We had the Raphaello suite - a two bedroom, two bathroom suite on the ground level in the main building with high, open beam ceilings, a huge traditional fireplace, harvest table and traditional/antique furniture. It was excellent and even better than the photos. Very spacious, especially the master bedroom. Bathrooms were excellent and included heated towel racks. The suite was spotlessly clean. We had a little patio off our living room that looked up into the olive grove and caught the afternoon sun. Other suites in separate buildings look over the hills and have great views. The pool, which is in the olive grove, was not open yet. Verona, the owner, was outstanding. She and her staff were most welcoming and very helpful in planning our daily outings, providing maps and directions, making recommendations, booking reservations at key sites in Florence and even checking the weather to help us maximize our trips and experiences. She was very responsive to whatever we had asked for and was a big part of our great experience. (She even allowed my teens to check their email on the office computer after 7 pm.) Breakfast, (tea/coffee/juice/milk, buns, cheese, jam) is delivered to your room either at a pre-arranged time or within 5 minutes of calling in the morning. This is a relaxing and beautiful spot in an excellent location. It is very close to the highways to travel south to Siena or west to Pisa and the coast and only 15 or 20 minutes to Florence and about 5 minutes to Scandicci for groceries, and other services (should you wish to cook in the kitchen facilities in the suite which we did). There is a restaurant very close that Verona had recommended - Ristorante de Miliones. Beautiful view, friendly service, and great food. Classic Tuscan dishes including their famous

Poggio ai Merli is a really lovely place, and ideal for a visit to Florence, as it gets you out of the city turmoil into benign countryside, but is only a short drive away. The appartments are large & handsomely appointed. Signora Bellina & her staff were warm in their welcome (their English is good) & even booked the Uffizi for us. A minor mix-up over our booking resulted in us being given a bigger appartment at no extra cost, which is service plus.

How to reach Residenza d'Epoca Villa Poggio ai Merli

By car
From the A1 motorway exit at Firenze-Certosa. At the roundabout, turn left and proceed towards Firenze Centro. From the tree-lined square of Galluzzo, at the set of traffic lights turn left and then at the stop sign turn left once more. Follow directions towards Volterrana/Cerbaia, driving along via Volterrana for about 2 km. When you reach the top of the hill, turn right into via di Giogoli. Continue along this street for about 2 km, past Giogoli Rossi restaurant, until you get to the estate's entrance on the right-hand side.

By train
From Florence railway station, take bus number 27 in via Iacopo da Diacceto towards Vingone and get off at piazza Marconi in Scandicci. Cross the street and go straight ahead into Scandicci Alto. At the junction, take the street on the left, via di Giogoli, and proceed for about 800 metres until you find the estate's entrance on the left-hand side.
